Kikuyu is a robust and fast-growing turf variety known for its excellent drought tolerance and ability to thrive in full sun. It is ideal for high-traffic areas, making it perfect for busy backyards, sports fields and public spaces. Kikuyu’s dense growth helps to suppress weeds and maintain a lush, green appearance year-round with minimal maintenance.

Palmetto Buffalo is a soft-leafed, low-maintenance turf that excels in shaded areas while still performing well in full sun. It requires less mowing and watering compared to other varieties, making it an eco-friendly choice for residential lawns. With its deep green colour and soft texture, Palmetto Buffalo adds a touch of luxury to any outdoor space while being resilient.

Deciding What Turf to Choose for Your Lawn

There are a few things to consider when choosing between Kikuyu grass and Palmetto Buffalo grass for your lawn. Kikuyu is a warm-season grass that does well in climates with hot, dry summers, while Palmetto Buffalo is a cool-season grass that does better in climates with milder winters. Kikuyu is also a bit more drought-tolerant than Palmetto Buffalo, so it may be a better choice if you live in an area with low water availability. Palmetto Buffalo also tends to be a bit more shade-tolerant than Kikuyu, so if your lawn is mostly shady, it may be a better choice.

It should be noted that both varieties are frost-resistant, as well as perfect for homes with children and pets. Both grasses are durable and soft underfoot, making them ideal for outdoor activities, while also providing excellent wear recovery to handle the wear and tear from everyday use.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does it take new turf to settle after being laid?

It should take about 4 to 6 weeks. A good test to know if it's taken well is to try to lift a corner at each end of your yard. If the turf is gripping and not lifting, then the roots have taken well.

  • How often should I water my new lawn?

You should water it twice a day when it has first been laid, and regularly once it has settled. Like most plants, it may need more water in the hotter months and less in the cooler months.

  • When can I mow my new lawn?

When it has properly settled, usually after 4-6 weeks. If you can lift a corner of the turf and the roots are firmly gripping the soil, then you can give it a light mow.
